Success Loops:
Defining Project Success

All projects strive to deliver the obvious project success factors such as delivering on time, on budget, within scope, and meeting stated objectives.

Much like trying to define ‘quality”, stakeholders will have different perceptions of what success looks like beyond the obvious criteria.

A project stakeholder’s view can be influenced by their role, department, or organization and even the last project in which they were involved.

In many cases, these additional “views of project success” are subconscious ones that, if not declared and discussed, can result in chaos for the project down the road.

Unfortunately, many project teams avoid the “success conversation” as they don’t want to set unrealistic expectations, perceive it as too expensive and time-consuming to engage the extended stakeholder team, and are worried about the impact on scope.  None of which need be true.

Success Loops Deliver ...

  • Meaningful stakeholder engagement builds buy-in and commitment to the project … even without complete agreement on the definition of success.

  • A greater chance of measuring the success of a project with declared statements versus subconscious desires.

  • A shared vision of the project promotes more informed decision-making by all stakeholders during project execution.

Success Loops are one of the best starts a project can be given.
